About the owner: Kim Pleticha holds dual Bachelor's Degrees in Spanish and English from the University of California at Irvine and a Master of Science degree in Journalism from Northwestern University.
Her professional background is as a television news producer, reporter and anchor. She has worked in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Minneapolis (her last television position was as a television news anchor in the Twin Cities). She also has written for many publications, specializing in women's issues and child & family policy.
Kim has won numerous Emmy, Golden Mike, UPI and other journalism awards, most recently the prestigious Child & Family Policy Fellowship from the University of Maryland.
Kim currently serves as the editor and publisher of her new magazine, Parent:Wise Austin.
Products and Services: Pleticha Publishing, Inc., dba Parent Wise Austin, publishes a monthly magazine (Parent:Wise Austin) for families in and around Austin. Currently, we publish 32,000 copies monthly and distribute them to 525 locations in and around Austin.
History: Kim Pleticha moved to Austin (from chilly Minneapolis, where she was working as a television news anchor) in 2001.
She worked as the editor for Our Kids Austin magazine until the corporate owner, Trader Publishing, decided that Austin "wasn't a profitable market" and shut down the magazine.
That happened on January 15, 2004. By January 27, 2004, Kim was incorporated as Pleticha Publishing, Inc. and ready to do her OWN magazine.
Frankly, Kim was mad that a corporation could *pretend* to care about Austin families, make money off of them, and then pull out (and leave local advertisers hanging!) because the corporation decided Austin wasn't making enough money for them. Disgusting, although it happens all of the time.
Kim founded Pleticha Publishing, Inc. on the basis of being responsive to Austin and the people who live here. As such, the company has been certified by the State of Texas as a Mother Friendly Worksite. The magazine, Parent:Wise Austin, has the largest family calendar in town, with roughly 200 single events (that's not counting events that recur on different days!) each month.
Parent:Wise Austin magazine is LOCAL: it is committed to sponsoring charitable events in the area; providing intelligent editorial written by award-winning journalists, scientists and others; and, in general, being responsive to the families and businesses in Austin who make us possible.
