Products and Services: Hog Island Deli is a quick service business which offers Austin an authentic Philly Cheesesteak and the authentic South Philadelphia charm from the east coast at an affordable price.
History: Near the historic shipyards of South Philadelphia at the mouth of the Schuylkill River lies Hog Island. This community, with ties that date back to pre-WWI, is famous for its historic shipyards and the Italian and Irish workers that laid its foundation.
Although the original hoagie or submarine sandwich can trace its roots to New York in the 1880s, these immigrants were able to integrate their cultural cuisine into the widely popular sandwich.
The shipbuilders on Hog Island began to bring these sandwiches to work every day from home. Soon, the sandwiches became synonymous with Hog Island and subsequently the word hoagie was derived. Then, in the 1930s two brothers, Harry and Pat Olivieri, put a twist on the popular sandwich by taking thinly sliced scraps from the local butcher, grilling them and adding cheese. The newly formed sandwich took off and before long, grilled onions and peppers were added, thus giving rise to the famous Philly Cheesesteak.
These famous Philly Cheesesteak became the stuff of legends in and around Philadelphia, for which many families owe their success too. In fact, the DiMarco brothers come from such a family whose delis in Philadelphia have won many awards.
And now, much like the Olivieri brothers introduced the Cheesesteak to Philadelphia, the DiMarco brothers are doing just that for central Texans by bringing their familys award winning recipe for success to Austin.
